Janmashtami is well known Hindu festival celebrated and mostly known as Krishna janmashtami. Lord Krishna is followed by million Hindu devotees. To them Krishna is their lord, teacher, philosopher and friend.

What is Janmashtami ?

Janmashtami is birth celebration of Lord Krishna. Who is widely accepted as Hindu liberator and Lord. Krishna had taken birth to make free earth from all evils. It is believed as he is avatar of Vishnu. On the eve of Janmashtami devotees keep fast through out the day to get good result.

When Janmashtami Celebrated ?

Janmashtami celebration happens on astami tithi on the month of Bhadra Krishna Paksha as per Hindu Calender. Janmashtami in 2012 will be celebrated on 10th August 2012( Thursday). Janmashtami been celebrated across India with a high spirit. It is believed that between 3200 and 3100 BC Krishna was living on earth.





How is Janmashtami Celebrated?

On the eve of Janmashtami devotees from different parts of country celebrate janmashtami festival in different way. Rasa Lila a special dramatic enactment of Krishna life featured in Mathura and Vrindavan. Rasa lila re-creates the flirtatious aspects of Krishna’s youthful days People chant Hare Krishna Hare Rama throughout the day.

In Delhi Dahi Handi a playful celebration of childhood of Krishna been presented in different Parts of city. A teams of young men form human pyramids to reach a high-hanging pot of butter and break it. The same event in Tamilnadu been celebrated in the name of Uriadi on Gokulashtami.

Janmashtami is one of the major festival and holidays in India. In north India it is celebrated with full swing. Mathura in Uttar pradesh is known for lord Krishna birth place where Krishna born and Gokul was his playground. So in Gokul and Vrindavan Krishna janmashtami celebration goes upto a week with full of crowd. In Orissa and west Bengal celebrated with full swing. Next day of Janmashtami is called as Nanda Utsav joyous celebration of Nanda Maharaj and Yashoda Maharaani. On that days people break their fast and offer various cooked sweets during the early hour. People sings janmashtami songs with a joy on Janmashtami aarti songs and bhakti songs creates a harmonic effects in the body and mind of Krishna devotees. People carry janmashtami pictures with them and some people worship to Krishna in their home keeping Krishna janmashtami photos and Idols.

As Lord Krishna was very fond of sweets, milk and other milk products like butter and buttermilk, so his devotees make sweets of these products to commemorate the occasion. Sweets like Gopalkala, Doodhachi Kheer, Pedha, or Gulabjamun are the major dishes prepared on Krishnashtami. Besides, Shrikhand and Singhare ki Poori are also made in households. Eatables like Murukku and Seeddai are popular in the Southern State of Tamil Nadu.You can find lot of Janmashtami special sweets in Delhi restaurants.

If it is Janamashtmi in North India, it is raas lila in Mathura / Vrindavan, better known as dahi handi across the Maharashtrian belt, in Odisha it becomes Nandotava or Nand Utsav. The North East celebrates it as Krishnajanma while the South goes all out to celebrate Krishna Jayanti, uriadi or Gokulashtami. The point is, Krishna’s birthday is celebrated with great fervor and frolic across the entire country!
